2 men injured in shooting outside Washington Community Center

TERRE HAUTE ? A shooting in Terre Haute remained under investigation Sunday evening as two victims were sent to area hospitals.

Yellow tape marked off a section of the Booker T. Washington Community Center?s parking lot Sunday afternoon where shell casings, blood and a knife remained on the ground as investigators checked the scene.

According to police, an altercation involving weapons occurred in the parking lot about 2:50 p.m. The lot is on the south side of the building, between the center and the Chuck Miles Memorial Shelter and the nearby playground.

The center is at the corner of 13th Street and College Avenue.

A community basketball tournament was reportedly under way inside the center at the time. Terre Haute City Parks and Recreation Department employee Martin DeBow was identified as the individual in charge of the tournament, but he declined to comment on the incident. Dozens of people wearing basketball team jerseys remained in the area past 4 p.m., but those asked for comment also declined.

Capt. Carl Greene said that to the best of his knowledge that afternoon, two men were shot during the incident and both were transported to local hospitals before being sent by air to Indianapolis. No more information would be available while the investigation continued, he said.

?We?re still trying to gather information,? he said at the scene, stating no arrests had been made and investigators were still trying to identify a suspect.

In another incident, 911 dispatchers said shots also were reported outside the Blu Katt Lounge off Seventh Street and Wabash Avenue at 1:58 a.m. Sunday morning. According to police, no injuries were reported and no arrests had been made by Sunday evening with regards to that incident.

(AP) ? A staff writer for The New Yorker has resigned and his latest book has been halted after he acknowledged inventing quotes by Bob Dylan.

Jonah Lehrer released a statement Monday through his publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, saying that some Dylan quotes appearing in his book "Imagine: How Creativity Works" did "not exist." Others were "unintentional misquotations, or represented improper combinations of previously existing quotes."

Lehrer said he acknowledged his actions after being contacted by Michael Moynihan of the online publication Tablet Magazine, which earlier Monday released an in-depth story on the Dylan passages in "Imagine"

"I told Mr. Moynihan that they (the quotes in question) were from archival interview footage provided to me by Dylan's representatives. This was a lie spoken in a moment of panic. When Mr. Moynihan followed up, I continued to lie, and say things I should not have said," Lehrer wrote in his statement.

"The lies are over now. I understand the gravity of my position. I want to apologize to everyone I have let down, especially my editors and readers."

Houghton Mifflin said in a statement that Lehrer had committed a "serious misuse." Listings for the e-book edition of "Imagine" will be removed and shipments of the physical book have been stopped. "Imagine" was published in March and had been selling well, ranking No. 105 on Amazon.com as of midday Monday.

The 31-year-old Lehrer, once a rising star at The New Yorker, was already in trouble with the magazine after he acknowledged last month that he had recycled passages he had written for previous publications. Some recycled passages also appeared in "Imagine," the latest of three books by Lehrer, who is known for his explorations of science and literature and how the mind works.

Among Lehrer's inventions was a quote that first appeared in the famous documentary from the mid-1960s, "Don't Look Back," in which Dylan tells a reporter about his songs that "I just write them. There's no great message." In "Imagine," Lehrer adds a third sentence ? "Stop asking me to explain" ? that does not appear in the film.

According to Tablet, Lehrer also invented quotes on how Dylan wrote "Like a Rolling Stone" and, when confronted about them, alleged that he had been granted access to an uncut version of "No Direction Home," a Dylan documentary made by Martin Scorsese. Lehrer now says he never saw such footage.

Americans Care About Jobs and Corruption

Gallup's latest survey reveals a GOP message geared to exactly what people are most concerned about.

While it sometimes seems as though President Obama is winning the day-to-day messaging war of late -- putting Republican challenger Mitt Romney on the defensive over his tax returns, or sitting back as Romney stumbles on the international stage, upsetting British and Palestinian leaders with remarks deemed insulting -- it's worth noting that Romney's overall message appears to be more in sync with the top concerns of Americans, as measured by a July 19-22 USA Today/Gallup poll.

Screen shot 2012-07-30 at 11.03.26 AM.png

You can also see from this how Romney's relentless focus on job creation, "crony capitalism," the deficit, and failed solar-energy company Solyndra plays not just to the top concerns of Republicans but to those of all voters, who are not that into environmental issues but care a lot about the deficit and perceived government corruption. You can also see how Obama's focus on raising taxes on the wealthy, while appealing to Democrats, is not nearly as important ground to fight on when it comes to Americans' top concerns.

Finance Money Monitor: Explain Medical Bankruptcies Up - Typepad

American Mailbox (Wakulla County, Florida) .. Walk Away From Debt For a Better Future by marsmet461Perhaps you are unaware or maybe you have indeed heard the statistic that 50% of all personal bankruptcies are caused due to medical bills. Often, far too often the folks actually had medical insurance, but the co-pays, deductibles or items not covered exceeded the ability of the patient or the patient?s family ability to pay. Most of these medical debtors were not lower class, rather middle class. The upper middle and upper class was able to weather the storm and onslaught of medical bills much easier. This tells us one thing, it tells us that the healthcare system is out of control and completely broken.

Health Law?s Flaws Will Spur Drive for Single

The health reform will leave 26 million uninsured even when it?s fully implemented, and force tens of millions to buy lousy coverage from private insurers. Instead of cutting out the insurance middlemen who caused the health care crisis, Obamacare hands them a trillion-dollar windfall from federal subsidies, mandated premiums and Medicaid managed-care contracts.

The Affordable Care Act and Medical Bankruptcy

In the short-term, the ball is in Minnesota?s court. According to rules issued by HHS, states will be responsible for determining whether or not the ACA-mandated exchanges will be ?active purchasers? or an ?open marketplace.? Exchanges that are active purchasers will be able to extract concessions from insurers while an open marketplace allows all insurance plans that meet the ACA?s requirements to be sold on the exchange. By being aggressive and establishing an active purchasing exchange that can negotiate for low deductibles and larger benefits, Minnesota can control costs and prevent some medical bankruptcies.

Will Health Care Reform Mean Fewer Bankruptcy Filings?

As you probably heard, last Thursday the Supreme Court ruled on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ?Obamacare?.? The court found the Act to be constitutional.? This decision means that should the Act stay in place, over the next few years many new changes will be enacted in an attempt to provide affordable healthcare to every American and to reform the healthcare insurance industry.? Politics aside, many questions remain about exactly how this Act will affect the country.? Specifically, we at Lakelaw are wondering what the effect of PPACA will be on bankruptcy.

When You Should File Medical Bankruptcy

But given the nature of medical conditions that often require ongoing treatment and costs, it is important you file for bankruptcy at the correct time. This is because bankruptcy can only discharge debts that have already been incurred, not those that are yet to be incurred. The last thing you would want is to incur hefty medical bills after you exit bankruptcy. You will not be allowed to file for bankruptcy protection until several years have passed. Thus all debts incurred after your bankruptcy is over are yours to bear.

Health Insurance May not Prevent Medical Related Bankruptcies

?Medical expenses have made up a significant number of bankruptcies for almost twenty-five years,? said Tampa bankruptcy attorney, Reginald Osenton of the Osenton Law Offices. ?With more high-? deductibles or employers shifting to higher deductible group health plans to save money, a lot of people with health insurance are still at risk of hitting financial hardship.?

What Fraction of Bankruptcies Is Caused By Medical Debt?

We don?t have to look very far for an answer. It seems that the authors are reluctant to take their respondents seriously when it comes to an understanding of their indebtedness. The survey clearly states that only 29 percent of the respondents believed that their bankruptcy was actually caused by medical bills. This number sounds like a reasonable approximation of the actual impact of medical debt on bankruptcies. In fact, it accords well with other findings in the literature, including my own. In an AEI working paper, I showed that when medical debts (as a fraction of income) rise by 10 percent, we are likely to observe an increase in bankruptcy filings induced by those debts by approximately 27 percent. In other words, if between 2001 and 2007, medical debts increased by about 10 percent (as a fraction of income), the study suggests that about 27 percent of the total filings during this period can be attributed to medical debts. The SCF shows that for all families, total debts as a fraction of income actually have increased by roughly that 10 percent figure over this period. Therefore, even if all of this increase was due to medical debts (which is unlikely since mortgage debts are ten times higher), the additional bankruptcy filings due to medical debts should be 27 percent of the total. Another paper by Domowitz and Sartain estimates the fraction of medical bankruptcies at about 30 percent, half of what the Warren study finds.

As figure 3 demonstrates, Medicare is the most profligate entitlement program in the world. In a review of the literature, Levy and Meltzer identified three high-quality studies examining the Medicare population and the effect Medicare had on health outcomes. They found that ?Medicare increases consumption of medical care and may modestly improve self-reported health but has no effect on mortality.?[7] Finkelstein and McKnight used data from the 1960s to see whether geographic areas with lower insurance coverage rates prior to the enactment of Medicare experienced improvements in mortality following the enactment of Medicare relative to areas with higher pre-1965 coverage rates. They found that while hospital utilization and spending increased significantly, ?In its first 10 years, the establishment of universal health insurance for the elderly had no discernible impact on their mortality.?[8] These findings are consistent with those of the RAND health-insurance experiment and reinforce the notion that medical care plays a relatively limited role in one?s overall health.

Medical debt bankruptcies may be avoided with these tactics

If you were covered by health insurance during your care and are unable to afford the associated copays, you may be able to eliminate the need to pay these if you can show that you are doing your best to repay them. Try writing a letter directly to your service provider and explain your situation. After making a case for yourself, request that your copays be waived and your bill be considered paid in full so that your financial situation does not become worse. Remind the provider that you were covered by health insurance and that most of the costs have already been paid by your coverage.

Sifting Through Internet Business Ideas | Online Success Articles

?

The thought of being able to work from home on the Internet is the dream of many people, but few actually figure out a way to pull it off. There are a number of Internet business ideas out there that can really work, but the entrepreneur has to research the opportunity carefully to make sure that it is legitimate. For those who are looking for business ideas that they can run over the Internet, here are a few potential possibilities to consider.

Auction Sales

One of the most popular online business ideas is selling goods through online auctions. For example, many people procure things that they can sell on auction sites like eBay for a profit. Many of them start out by selling things that they have lying around the house, and then move on to bigger projects. For instance, they may go to garage and yard sales to find things that they can resell on eBay. From that point, they may eventually move on to working with a drop shipping company to sell all kinds of different products. Some people also buy large pallets or truckloads full of products from liquidation companies to resell on eBay as well. Any of these strategies can work with a little bit of effort on the part of entrepreneur.

Selling Digital Products

Another strategy that an online entrepreneur could pursue is selling digital products. For example, some entrepreneurs sell things like software packages, audio files, videos, or e-books. The nice thing about selling digital products is that they can be delivered instantly, and do not require a lot of oversight from the entrepreneur. This makes it possible for anyone to quickly sell a large number of products to others around the world. Another advantage of selling digital products is that nothing has to be physically created or shipped. This cuts down on production costs, fulfillment and shipping costs.

Freelance Business

With the help of the Internet, people in almost every industry could potentially start freelance businesses that they run online. By using videoconferencing, VoIP technology and other tools, almost anything can be done remotely. For instance, entrepreneurs could start freelance bookkeeping, writing, programming, Web design, or consulting businesses.

Many businesses like the idea of being able to hire freelancers because they don?t have to pay for things like worker?s compensation, health insurance or retirement benefits. They can simply pay for the work that they need done instead of paying for all of these other items.

Overall, there are a lot of different Internet home business ideas that could potentially work by taking the right steps. Just make sure that the idea is well-researched and thought out before investing any real capital into it.

Taylor 'relishing' South Africa challenge

James Taylor is "relishing" the prospect of facing South Africa's bowling attack at Headingley having been called into the squad for the second Test but is not taking his debut for granted.

Unless England change the balance of their side and play five bowlers, which is unlikely, Taylor will earn his first cap at No. 6 after Ravi Bopara became unavailable due to personal reasons shortly before the squad was named on Sunday morning.

Taylor, who has been captain of England Lions over the last two years and averages 61.60 from ten first-class matches for them, has long been earmarked as a Test batsman in waiting. But he had seemingly fallen down the pecking order at the start of this season after failing to secure a place in the extended England performance squad and Jonny Bairstow was chosen to replace an injured Bopara against West Indies.

However, Taylor led the Lions against the West Indians in May and scored an impressive century at Derby and this week hit his first Championship hundred for his new county, Nottinghamshire, against Sussex. It is actually Taylor's one-day form that has been more consistent and he has made 345 runs at 69 in the CB40.

"Facing South Africa's bowling attack is always going to be a tough challenge but it's something that I would relish because getting an England Test call has been my aim from the word go," he said. "Test cricket is the pinnacle but there was a noticeable step up to division one of the Championship and wickets haven't been easy to bat on this season

"I've always backed myself to play at the highest level and even though I'm young I've played a lot of cricket and I've got a lot of runs behind me. The next goal is to get a place in the eleven and if I get that opportunity I have to take it with both hands. If I get in the team then I have to work hard to get runs and then work harder again to do that consistently.

"I've always tried to keep my feet on the ground and strive to become a better player and that will always be my mantra."

Taylor's move from Leicestershire to Nottinghamshire for this season was with the aim of boosting his Test ambitions after getting a brief taste of international cricket last season against Ireland. He has now jumped back ahead of Bairstow while fighting off the challenge of Eoin Morgan and Nick Compton.

"I hoped that I would be next in line but I never took anything for granted although I have scored consistent runs in all forms of the game to earn this chance," he said. "Playing at Headingley would be a very proud moment for me but nothing has happened yet, I'm just one step closer and waiting for the nod and the opportunity to help England to get back into the series.

Benefits of Using Smokeless Delite Cigarettes | articlereference.net

Finding The Best Smokeless Cigarette

For someone who has been struggling with a smoking addiction and plans to quit, finding the best smokeless cigarette could be the way to finally kick the habit. For long-time smokers, there is nothing worse than having to resist the urge to smoke. However, there are products available on the market today that offer an alternative to smoking. Smokeless Delite is considered the top best smokeless cigarette brands on the market. Their products can help smokers wean themselves off from tobacco cigarettes, and at the same time fully enjoy this great smoking tobacco alternative. Aside from being an excellent way to get rid of this habit, electronic cigarettes also provides a number of health benefits, which you would not get if you continued to huff and puff real tobacco based products.

Electronic cigarettes are a healthier alternative to real cigarettes because you are not inhaling toxic cigarette fumes. One of the main reasons why cigarette smoking leads to disease is because it causes a buildup of tar in the lungs, and this, overtime, makes it difficult for the lungs to do their job. Aside from tar, cigarettes contain a myriad of other chemicals, which are also harmful to the body. And since these smokeless cigarettes do not contain any harmful chemicals, they will not be harmful for smokers who also suffer from asthma. Smoking we all know anyways is a no-no for people who have this condition, which makes electronic cigarettes the best option for someone who wants their breathing condition or asthma to get better and to quit smoking for good.

Another benefit of electronic cigarettes is that they cost cheaper compared to your usual cigarette packs. Cartridges help and add real value by providing the smoker with approximately 2 times the same amount of smoking time as a real pack of cigarettes, but by only costing half the price of your average cigarette pack! In fact, if you are used to smoking a pack a day you can save $150 a month if you switched to electronic cigarettes, while lowering your addiction to nicotine at the same time.

You are also not offending others when you smoke electronic cigarettes like Smokeless Delite. They emit water vapor, not real tobacco smoke, which studies have shown, can also be harmful to others who inhale the smoke. This way you are not putting you, your family and friends at risk when you puff on a smokeless cigarette.

How could an Electronic Cigarette make a change for the Better

Electronic cigarettes work by simulating the act and sensations of smoking, without the harmful vapors. You can choose among many flavors and replaceable filters. Smokeless Delite cigarettes have variance in levels of nicotine choices. This is a great choice for those who think that quitting smoking cold turkey may not be the best route for them.

In Conclusion:

Electronic cigarettes offer numerous advantages and health benefits for someone who wants to quit smoking. Aside from being a healthier alternative to tobacco:

1) They cost half the price of tobacco based cigarettes.
2) Are 100% more environmentally friendly compared to tobacco cigarettes.
3) Are not in any way offensive to other people around you as you smoke.

And so in conclusion, for those who want the true smokeless cigarette of choice then the choice is obvious, it?s Smokeless Delite.

Smokeless Delite is the leading electronic cigarette company based out of Los Angeles. We have been in the smokeless cigarette business since 2008 and have serviced over 1 million customers.

Romanians vote on whether to impeach president

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? Romania is holding a referendum on impeaching President Traian Basescu, part of a political battle that has raised questions about the rule of law in the fledgling EU member.

Basescu's rivals are seeking to impeach him for the second time in five years. They claim the 60-year-old populist violated the constitution by meddling in government business, coddling cronies and using the secret services against enemies.

Basescu says the impeachment process is a political vendetta carried out by opponents plotting to seize control of EU funds and the justice system. He has urged supporters to boycott Sunday's vote in order to nullify it by a low turnout.

The political turmoil has dented Romania's credibility, with the U.S. and the EU expressing doubts about the left-leaning government's respect for the judiciary's independence.

Analysis: Apple sounds warning bell for smartphone industry

(Reuters) - If Apple Inc's weaker-than-expected quarterly result is anything to go by, the global smartphone industry is a lot more vulnerable to economic shocks these days than during the 2008-2009 financial crisis.

In developed markets, every other person already owns a smartphone. In emerging markets, penetration rates are much lower, but cheaper phones that cost under $100 are squeezing profit margins.

That was not the case during the last recession, when Apple's iPhone and Google Inc's Android were still in their infancy. Smartphone demand remained strong even as sales of other electronics declined because consumers felt it was worthwhile to upgrade to a device with so much to more to give - touchscreens, email and full Web browsers.

Without a technology breakthrough such as touchscreen - made popular by the first iPhone in 2007 - people are in far less of a hurry to upgrade their phones this time around, analysts said.

That was evident from Apple's June quarterly results, which showed a much bigger hit from the European debt crisis than Wall Street expected.

"The economy is having an impact on all electronic goods. Even Apple, which did defy gravity in the last recession, is not escaping now," said Hudson Square Research analyst Daniel Ernst.

Smartphone users, who typically upgrade their phones every 18 to 24 months, are now holding on for three months longer than usual, according to Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

"The reason to upgrade is less urgent" she said.

PRICE PRESSURE

Overall smartphone shipments rose 32 percent in the second quarter, their slowest pace since 2009's 16 percent increase, according to Strategy Analytics. The research firm forecast annual smartphone shipment growth would slow to 40 percent in 2012 from 68 percent in 2011 and ease further to 23 percent in 2013.

Analysts say demand from emerging markets will support smartphone shipments even if the global economy takes a turn for the worse, but a growing supply of lower price devices from vendors such as Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp will pressure prices even if the economy improves.

"We're forecasting ASPs (average selling prices) to dip in 2013 and accelerate from there on," said Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston. "If the economy continues to flat line or dip that will accelerate the move to lower cost models."

The popularity of Apple's iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy S will give these companies some pricing insulation, analysts said.

But there could be much more pressure for price cuts at already struggling smartphone vendors, such as LG Electronics Inc, HTC Corp, Nokia Oyj and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd.

"Apple and Samsung's ownership of the high-tier and intense price erosion means the fight among others will be cutthroat," said CCS Insight analyst Geoff Blaber.

The tough road ahead for smaller vendors became more apparent this week, when market leader Samsung reported its best quarterly smartphone sales in history as it outsold Apple and won customers from smaller rivals. Samsung's bigger size allowed it to drive down costs and still make a profit on phones that would generate a loss for smaller rivals.

Some of Apple's earnings miss was attributed to consumers postponing purchases in anticipation of a new iPhone model hitting store shelves this fall. LG did not have that excuse - its cellphone division, which accounts for around one-fifth of sales, posted a quarterly loss as competition forced LG to spend more on marketing for cheaper phones.

LESS PURCHASING POWER

According to Gartner, about 35 percent of an estimated 1.9 billion cellphones sold this year will be smartphones. Between 20 percent and 25 percent of people in the world already own smartphones, with the penetration rate rising to 50 percent to 55 percent in the United States.

"The first wave is selling expensive models to affluent buyers. The second wave is selling lower cost models to less affluent buyers," Strategy Analytic's Mawston said.

Gartner's Milanesi said Huawei and ZTE are in the best position among the lower-tier smartphone vendors.

"If price is the first driver I'm going to pick the Chinese," said Milanesi, who said LG and HTC are most vulnerable to price declines as they "need more to stand out."

Also putting pressure on handset makers are the wireless service providers on which they are heavily dependent in many regions such as Europe and the United States for promotions. Carriers often subsidize phones to encourage their customers to commit to long term contracts.

In Europe, some operators such as Telefonica have been dropping subsidies entirely. The top three U.S. operators, Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc and Sprint Nextel Corp have all been improving profit margins because they cut down on their subsidy costs by offering customers upgrades less frequently.

If consumers do have to cut spending because of the weak economy, IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said: "There's smartphone available for just about every single budget out there."

LONDON (AP) ? It's go time for the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team. It's gold time.

The challenging exhibition schedule is over, marching in the opening ceremony is already a memory and the Olympic flame is burning brightly.

"We're ready," said coach Mike Krzyzewski.

They'd better be. Don't expect any opponents asking for photographs or autographs ? there are teams here that feel they can beat the Americans.

Although heavily favored to win the 12-nation tournament and capture gold just as they did four years ago in Beijing, the superstar-studded U.S. squad will face a talented field loaded with NBA players.

On Sunday, the U.S. opens pool play against France, an experienced squad led by San Antonio guard Tony Parker, who nearly missed the London Games because of a serious eye injury. Parker's ability to break down defenses and create in the open floor could pose an early problem for the Americans. And he's not the only headache for the U.S. as France's roster includes Ronny Turiaf, Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum, Kevin Seraphin and Nando de Colo ? all currently on NBA rosters.

"It's a big test for us," U.S. forward Carmelo Anthony said, lacing up his sneakers Saturday before practice at East London University. "We're going up against guys that we normally play on a night-to-night basis, and those countries have put them all together just like we have. And at the end of the day their main goal is to beat the United States.

"There's going to be some good battles."

France will only be the first. This isn't going to be some easy sightseeing stroll along the Thames for the American team before stepping onto the gold-medal stand. Spain, Argentina and Brazil are all talented enough to not only compete with the U.S., but potentially upset the world's No. 1 team.

That wasn't the case four years ago, when the U.S. steamrolled through the field, winning by at least 20 points in each of its first seven games before beating Spain 118-107 in the final. Krzyzewski, who guided the 2008 "Redeem Team" to gold, believes a potential road to gold could have some dangerous bumps.

"The overall 12 teams are more talented, more seasoned," he said. "Spain is just in the prime of their ? 28, 29 (years of age). Brazil is in that wheelhouse. I think Russia's really, really good. Obviously Argentina, everyone says they're older but their heart and talent has not gotten older, It's just gotten better.

"There's just more teams that feel that they have a chance to win the gold medal ? and medal ? than they did in '08."

Count the French among them. They finished second to Spain at last year's European Championships, and maintain they won't be intimidated by the U.S. team's collection of All-Stars, MVPs and household names. France's players have no intention of being posterized on a dunk by LeBron James or Kobe Bryant the way 7-foot-2 countryman Frederic Weis was famously embarrassed by a soaring Vince Carter in the 2000 Sydney Games.

France, 0-4 against the U.S. in Olympic competition, isn't frightened.

"For us there is no fear factor because we play against them all the time," said Parker, who will wear goggles to protect his surgically repaired left eye. "We know they are really, really good. But it's not going to be like the other teams where they don't see them and it's like, 'Oh, wow, I'm playing against Kobe and LeBron.'"

Bryant likened France's offense to the one Parker runs with the Spurs. Everything starts with the ball in Parker's hands, so the U.S. team's challenge will be to make him give it up.

"Slow him down and surround him," Bryant said. "Keep bodies in front of him at all times."

This U.S. team, comprised of five holdovers from the '08 squad, five from the 2010 world championship team and two newcomers, was loose and relaxed before Saturday's workout, a final tune-up before beginning the five-game preliminary round. Durant and Anthony playfully horsed around in the foul lane and Bryant smiled amusingly as photographers jockeyed for position like paparazzi trying to record his every move.

The mood will be decidedly different Sunday.

That's when everything change. That's when it matters.

"Everybody expects us to win gold," James said. "And that's what we're here for. Nothing else."

In recent days, Bryant, James and the other U.S. players have been careful not to get trapped into making comparisons to the Dream Team. Bryant recently caused a stir by saying the 2012 Olympians could beat the 1992 version that included Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Jordan called Bryant's comments "not one of the smarter things he ever could have done."

For now, the talk has quieted, the comparisons can wait. For this American team to be regarded among the others before them, there can only be one medal.

"The legacy will be determined if you win the gold or you don't," Krzyzewski said. "We're not talking about legacy everyday but it is. We're here to win a gold medal, and if we do less than that, then it will be a big loss for us."

Health Care Insurance is Not Insurance | Rebel Yid - Ideas beyond ...

Cliff Asness writes The Healthcare Myths We Must Confront in The American, 6/29/12.

Excerpt:

Myth #2:? The pre-ObamaCare system was ?insurance?

It was not a system of insurance. Insurance, as practiced everywhere else but healthcare, is about catastrophes. What we had was a government-subsidized payment plan funneled through insurance companies.

OK, this part is going to sting a bit. I never promised you there would be no math. Let?s step back a bit and talk about how insurance works. Few of us buy insurance because we expect to make money on the deal. No, the insurance company expects to profit and we expect to lose a bit. Free marketers and socialists can both surely agree that the insurance companies expect to profit. Well, how do they profit? It?s statistics (I told you it would sting). If they sell 1,000 policies that pay out $100,000 but only 1 percent of the time, they on average pay out $1,000,000 (1,000 policies times a $100,000 payoff times 1 percent, as 99 percent of the time they don?t pay). If they sell them for $1,100 each they take in 1,000 x $1,100 or $1,100,000 and will make a profit of $100,000. But despite the insurance company profiting, insurance can often be a great deal for you. You take out insurance because there are events that would cause you severe financial hardship?for instance, the totaling of a car you can?t afford to replace, the death of your family?s bread winner, or the destruction of your house. It?s worth overpaying a bit to avoid catastrophic financial consequences. We often call insurance like this ?catastrophic,? as you?re only paying a small amount to insure against improbable but devastating events. Actually, we usually don?t bother to even call it ?catastrophic insurance.? We usually just call it ?insurance,? as that?s how it almost always works? except in healthcare!

The insurance companies? expected profits are not without risk. Companies compete on premiums to see who can sell the insurance for the lowest price while still being profitable, and, importantly, they compete on ?underwriting.? Underwriting is attempting to assess risks and charge consumers most accurately, charging more for expensive, more probable risks, and less for the opposite (in my example above, I pretended we knew these risks; in reality, the insurance company has to guess at them). The insurance companies that predict more accurately are generally more profitable, and those that are woefully inaccurate go out of business.

Let?s get back to healthcare. Due primarily to the tax subsidy given to employer-provided healthcare (a bipartisan, so-far-untouchable disaster), catastrophic health insurance is not Americans? norm. Rather, employers provide essentially all healthcare from basic health maintenance and symptom relief to the most expensive life-saving procedures, and they do it because the government massively subsidizes this approach.

This is odd. You don?t go to your car insurer to fill your car with gas or to your homeowner?s insurance company to change a light bulb. Why do you go to your health insurance company for everyday medical services? That is not insurance, it is tax-subsidized provision of all your healthcare needs, and it causes two of our system?s biggest problems. 1) Health coverage is not portable, as it?s employer-provided, and 2) consumers are insulated from the cost of basic healthcare because they don?t pay directly for services. Educated consumers spending their own money would be far better shoppers for healthcare. Also, I wish I wasn?t asked for a $5 co-pay after a doctor?s appointment. Ask me to pay at least $200 or nothing. Paying $5 for a prostate exam is demeaning to both parties.

Why does this matter? ObamaCare sets out to fix health insurance, and to provide it to more people. Laudable goals. But the system we had was not badly managed health insurance. It wasn?t insurance at all. ObamaCare does not throw out the crazy system we had in favor of real insurance, which would actually work, but rather enshrines and extends all the problems of an insane healthcare payment system masquerading as insurance and built as a tax dodge.

HKO Comments:

While many are without insurance the real problem is that many of us are over insured.? It is the equivalent of buying an auto insurance policy that covers oil changes and flat tires. The government requires mandated coverage that drives costs up. ?Again this would be the same as ?mandating? that all wheel alignments have to be covered by your auto insurance.

Asness is correct that the root of this distortion was tax law, but the accumulation of federal mandates and intrusions over decades have added to the cost.? Obamacare ruled that high deductable health plans now must cover physicals and preventive care.? We used to save a considerable sum on health insurance because we chose to cover those items out of pocket.? (again think what would happen if your auto insurance carrier was required to cover oil changes.) As a result the lowest cost insurance coverage, with the most amount of consumer input has been priced out of the market.
